Advanced Features: Encoding Options

Before you upload your media files, you may want to configure how your media will be encoded.  For most purposes, you will never need to modify the default settings.  However, if you are an audiophile or are attempting to get the best stream rate or best quality, you may want to configure how your videos will be encoded.

The multi-file upload form contains a tab for Encoding Options at the top of the page.  Select this tab to visit your account encoding options page.

Dashboard -> Upload Files -> Encoding Options

On the encoding options form, you may set all of the following:

  • audio bitrate, frequency, and stereo options
  • video maximum width
  • video aspect ratio (full 3:4 or wide 16:9)
  • video frames per second

When changing the default options, you may need to be aware of the following points:

  • The overall video bitrate is determined from a formula using width, and frames per second.  The higher your selections, the more bandwidth your video will use.  The simple rule is: the higher the quality settings, the more bandwidth is used.  The lower the quality the faster the media will download and stream.
  • Videos can be scaled smaller but can not be made bigger when uploading because PubClip can not insert quality into a video which did not already exist.  You can publish a larger player later, but the video file will remain as large as the media you upload and no larger.
